Nature has provided Natural Water resources such as Rainwater, Groundwater, and Surface water in the form of water bodies such as Ponds, Lakes, Creeks, and Rivers.

Normally, a network is laid down in the form of Stormwater Drains to collect rainwater and discharge it into the nearest river or any other water body.

Another source of water is the body of a Living Being. It is called Sewage. It is not a natural source of water but can be treated and converted into a resource to produce Reclaimed Water for reuse in various activities.

They harnessed natural water resources by misusing them in many ways. Instead of constructing sewage networks along with Sewage Treatment Plants (STPs), they created a disastrous situation by discharging Untreated Sewage in Natural Sources, especially Rivers through Stormwater Networks, ignoring the hazardous nature of sewage. Currently, these drains are called “Open Drains or Nallah” in India which are the major sources of Surface water pollution in India.

ABR Technology is based on a Bioremediation Technique and is an innovative biological treatment process developed by Dr. Mamta Tomar, Technical Head and Director of M/s Thetanox Consulting & Envirotech Pvt., Ltd. Co., using a Bio-Consortium containing Strict and Facultative Anaerobic bacteria which are capable of growing under anoxic conditions.

These bacteria do not require dissolved oxygen (DO) to decompose hazardous organic contaminants. Instead of DO, they utilize a combined form of oxygen available in nitrate (NO3) molecules to decompose Toxic and Hazardous Contaminants and convert them into simpler, non-toxic components.

CURRENT SITUATION OF DRAINS IN INDIA: MAIN CAUSES OF POLLUTION & FLOOD

The massive inflow of sewage and industrial effluents converts the drains, and ultimately a River into a Collection Sink of Sewage & Garbage. Cleaning has become one of the most complicated and expensive missions for the government.

As of 2020-2021, the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) of India reported the following:

  • Sewage generation: 72,368 million litres per day (MLD) of sewage was generated in urban areas
  • Treatment capacity: The installed sewage treatment capacity was 31,841 MLD, but the operational capacity was only 26,869 MLD
  • Treatment rate: Only 28% of the sewage was treated, while 72% was discharged untreated into rivers, lakes, and groundwater
